Breathing clean air, be it at home, at the office, in factories or in the city streets, might not be such a mirage: an Italian start-up has devised a technology that literally “washes up” polluted air with water to make it clean again.
Is Clean Air, bubbles of purified air
The system, called APA (Air Pollution Abatement Systems), was developed by the innovative start-up Is Clean Air, part of Is Tech, the company led by Ceo Giuseppe Spanto, and is about to be commercially available.
Is Clean Air and APA are all-Italian ideas and solutions to abate fine particles and purify air; the system was certified by the European Commission for its proven excellence within the Horizon 2020 program.
This is not the first or the only “air cleaning” solution on the market, but the approach is revolutionary because of a close to zero environmental impact: the APA platforms, dislocated in selected locations, create bubbles of purified air in the surrounding area (on a 25 to 28 meter-distance); they do that by using only water, with no additives, and with low energy consumption.
A distributed abatement process for highly polluted areas
“We propose an alternative solution, widely applicable to the reduction of air pollution, especially particulate. The creation of a wide area network of distributed air pollutant absorbers, called APA, acts to treat the air in all indoor and outdoor areas characterized by high concentration levels of particulates and other pollutants. APA is particularly suitable for working, production and industrial sites as well as residential areas with high population density and intensive vehicular traffic”, says the company.
The approach is based on a (distributed) innovative strategy, focused on pollution abatement where necessary to offer a focused process effectively and closely related to the real needs of the areas to be cleaned up; that is, areas with high population density where pollution is higher (mainly because of the effects of road traffic) and there is an urgent need to limit the greenhouse gases concentration.
All activities located in Trento
The startup has already met (during the Investor Day held at the Unicredit Tower Hall) with potential investors and business angels and is continuing its roadshow to pitch its projects to the financial community. The president of Is Clean Air, Pietro Calò, also signed the agreement to locate the startup in Rovereto in “Progetto Manifattura”, the cleantech incubator of Trentino Sviluppo. The area around Trento is one of the most dynamic in Europe and globally for the initiatives focused on innovation, technology and Green Economy.
In Rovereto Is Clean Air will concentrate both its manufacturing and its R&D, design and commercialization activities. Through partnerships and joint ventures, licensing and co–development models, the startup is also hoping to expand internationally.
