The Italian interior design industry, the sector of the Italian economy that, probably, best of all represents the Made in Italy quality in the world, is finally growing again after a few years of difficulties and a production decrease.
The 56th edition of Salone del Mobile, the most important event for the world’s interior design community, has started this week in Milan. The first statistics of this year are more than satisfying: the production of furniture and interior decoration accessories in Italy is growing for the second year in raw (+2,3% at the end of the 2016). One of the most important indexes for Italy in this context is the continuous growth of the responsiveness of the foreign markets which is a clear indicator of a dynamic development after the years of recession.
A big occasion not only for the interior design industry
As already stated above, Salone del Mobile in Milan is the most expected international interior design fair.
More than 2000 companies-participants (2/3 Italian and 1/3 foreign ones) start the preparation to this important event months in advance. This year more than 300 thousand visitors from 165 different countries are expected to visit the fair.
Being an unmissable occasion for the operators of the interior design industry Salone del Mobile is also a great business event for Milan in general. In the days of the fair about 1500 events of the so-called Fuorisalone (“Beyong Salone del Mobile”) are organized in different locations of the city generating a touristic flow of more than 400 thousand persons and an income of nearly 230 million euro.
Export opportunities for the Made in Italy interior design
This year a high presence of foreign interior design operators is expected at Salone del Mobile (last year it was 70%), especially the ones from the most dynamic counties.
Today more than 50% of all the interior design products manufactured in Italy are still exported to the EU countries. However, Europe, together with Italy itself, is soon going to be considered domestic market for the manufacturers of the interior design industry. The most interesting opportunities arrive from the overseas: from emerging or anyway dynamic countries that every year require more and more investments and tailor-made sales strategies within long-term projects.
Last year the USA became one of the three largest export markets for the Made in Italy interior design products with 912 million of the export value (+8,8% in comparison to the 2015). The trends show that the USA is going to become a strategic target market for many Italian furniture and interior accessories manufacturers.
Another priority target is China that became the 7th biggest export market of the Italian furniture in the 2016 with nearly 317 million euro (+21,9% in comparison to the 2015).
