An Italian surgeon has developed a free web app to support vascular surgeons around the world.
Dr. Paolo Spada, vascular surgeon at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milano, designed and developed the planning tool for endovascular procedures, which has received widespread appreciation from surgeons around the world.
Endovascular means “inside blood vessels.” Vascular surgeons are trained in the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting all parts of the vascular system (veins and arteries) except those of the heart and brain.
To perform endovascular procedures, vascular surgeons use special technologies and instruments. Dr Spada’s app, entitled EVARplanning, is designed to facilitate endovascular implants, a form of treatment for abdominal aortic and thoracic aneurysm. The advantage of the technique is that it permits a less invasive treatment compared to a traditional open surgery.
The app allows the surgeon to define the configuration for the most suitable prosthetic, choosing from those available on the market, based on the measurement of the aortic size from the TAC. In this way, the surgeon can more accurately plan the intervention, by identifying the most suitable implant to each individual patient.
Why develop an app for surgeons?
“Surgeon’s instruments are becoming more technological and complex every day. It means there is no room for improvisation: the success of our operations is in large part decided before we even start. By planning, and developing tailored strategies, we can be less invasive, more precise, effective and safer. That’s why our application is having so much success “ Dr. Spada explains.
The surgeon understood that it no longer made sense to delegate the choice of the technology to others. He spotted a common need shared by all vascular colleagues, and challenged himself to develop this important surgery planning tool, a tool which did not exist before.
The app can be used online for free around the world. The site was launched just over a year ago, and already has a large following in the community of vascular specialists (there are more than 800 registered members, more than 1000 sessions per month), as well as with the manufacturers of implants and medical software.
In fact Dr. Spada has presented his app at the Evar Sizing and Planning workshop, held in Maastricht (Netherlands) earlier this year, and in April was in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as part of the Cardio Vascular Challenges Conference.
