Hoteliers say occupancy risen to 60%
Good results for tourism in Milan: May hotel reservations climbed 50% compared to last year as the city ramps up for Expo 2015, which runs May to October.
”Confirmed reservations – said the vice president of Confcommercio Giorgio Rapari, speaking for Apam (Associazione albergatori Confcommercio Milano) – increased from 45% to 60-65%. “In short, there are still rooms available but the situation is considerably better than in recent weeks and the good May trend is confirmed in the following months with doubling of bookings in June (50%), July and August (month of traditionally low season, which are at 30%) and in September and October (40%).
Expo 2015 is Italy’s chance to “give the millions of people who will come a reason to appreciate Italy and to return,” said on Monday Dario Franceschini, Italian Minister for Tourism and Cultural Heritage. “2015 will be an extraordinary year: we’re starting the year with Expo and the year after will be a Jubilee year,” Franceschini said, referring to the Catholic Church’s “Year of Mercy” announced by Pope Francis in March to take place from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016.
