Call them just Danilo and Alessio. Even though the company they founded, Optima Italia S.p.A., is one of the highest-growing Italian multi-utilities, with over 100,000 business customers and a 147-million turnover, the president Danilo Caruso and the Ceo Alessio Matrone proud themselves for the cozy, down-to-earth yet stylish environment they have created on the job. It couldn’t be the other way around: Optima is based in Naples, just where Southern Italy begins, an area that is often overlooked by businesses but where Danilo and Alessio have been tapping their best resources: people. And their main asset: synergies.
Picture Optima’s headquarters in Naples as a series of working areas alternating with living rooms with large sofas and music, a sauna, a playroom and a coffee shop. They are working spaces in their own way: Optima thrives on its people’s conversation and aggregation, and that is how their ideas come up and are developed. The company stands in between a young Silicon Valley start-up and a typical American college campus – that’s way it’s been dubbed the “Google of Southern Italy”.
“People spend a lot of time at work and we think they should be surrounded by all the comforts. This way they have a higher quality of life and they also become more productive and creative – and creative ideas are what inspire our work at Optima”, says president Danilo Caruso, who is 41 years old. Consider him a “veteran”: the average age in the company – about 150 people are in the staff – is below 30. “We believe in human resources: Italy, and, allow me to say, Southern Italy, have a huge potential in this area. Of course we invest in training too, as well as in R&D, and we have our own marketing channel that grants us a quick time-to-market. We want to keep growing and become a truly national company, but we never forget that our heart is in the South and in Naples: we try to convince talented young people not to leave Italy but to work for us”, says 36-year old Ceo Alessio Matrone.
Optima Italia is a multi-utility focusing on electricity, gas and telecom services. It was funded in 1999 following the liberalization of the energy and telecom markets in Italy. Its mission is to help customers move through a host of offers coming from numerous providers that have entered the market, making it more fragmented and chaotic. Optima’s job is to completely take care of the provision of energy and telecom services for its customers assuring they find the best solutions and prices, fit for their needs, leaving them free to devote their resources to their core business. And with the plus of paying all of their energy and telecom services in one single bill.
