The Italian startup Rulex Inc., that offers the first-ever cognitive machine learning platform for the enterprise and the Internet of Things, was selected by the 13th Annual MIT Sloan CIO Symposium as one of ten Finalists for the 2016 Innovation Showcase, a recognition of Rulex cognitive machine learning platform and its strategic value and innovation potential for the digital economy. “The technologies of these top 10 companies are leading edge, and will be vital to empowering the future digital economy”, said Anton Teodorescu, Co-Chair of the Innovation Showcase.
Rulex relies on Italian talents for R&D
“We were delighted to receive this opportunity to share our innovation with the forward-looking folks at this esteemed event,” says Andrea Ridi, Rulex Ceo and co-founder.
The startup is a spin-off of Genoa’s Cnr; although its headquarters are now located in Boston, the company is keeping its research and development activity entirely in Italy. Why?
“The US has the market scale we need to grow into a multinational, as we are planning to do now, but Italy has a pool of talented loyal workers that we want to capitalize”, says Ridi.
Rulex R&D lab (6 people work there at the moment, but the headcount will double soon) is therefore still in Genoa and leverages “the skills that Italian students do have”, points out Ridi. “We hire highly trained people, with a degree in STEMs and a doctorate; then we give them specific training on our platform”. “Italy can improve its ability to create a market for innovation”, goes on Ridi, “but on the other hand it offers innovative companies like we are the unique advantage of a pool of talents that we can invest on on a long-term basis and that can actively take part in our growth”.
Rulex, a unique platform to extract logic from Big Data
Rulex Inc. offers the first-ever automated cognitive machine learning platform for the enterprise and the Internet of Things. This machine learning software platform uses cognitive, not computational, techniques to extract readable business logic, not black box calculations, from Big Data, and to make fast distributed predictions at the edge of the network. Rulex gives business and data experts the tools they need for rapidly monetizing enterprise, commercial, social, and IoT data, with lower cost and regulatory risk than other approaches. In Italy, Rulex has worked for example with Associazione Medici Diabetologi for a cognitive intelligence project (Diabetes Intelligence) to assess and capitalize on the role of diabetes caring in Italy.
Stimulating an innovation ecosystem
While planning to grow into a multinational, by expanding its footprint into new markets (like the UK and the Nordics), Rulex intends also to invest in Italy, starting from its Genoa R&D center. The expansion in Italy will be handled through partnerships with the aim of stimulating a true innovation ecosystem. “In fact, we are already activating a network and accelerating business through innovation: that’s part of what we believe in”, says Ridi.
