Italy, country of poets, saints and sailors, is often called “Il Bel Paese” (“The Beautiful Country”), for its mild climate, its rich cultural and historical patrimony and for its amazing landscapes. The famous Italian poets Dante and Petrarca were the first ones to use this expression, and since that time Italian treasures have raised till deserve the first place in the list of World Heritage sites, defined by Unesco and composed of 1001 sites in 161 countries worldwide.

A recent article by Huffington Post, in fact, states that no other country has as much World Heritage sites as Italy, which leads the rank with 50 sites. The basic criterion for the choice of the places – as stated in the Unesco Convention signed in 1972 – is the uniqueness of the site. It also must have a capacity of cultural and international attraction”.
